Treasury Secretary posts sweeping statement on X ahead of Monday press conference
WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took to X Monday morning to signal the most aggressive U.S. economic offensive against Iran in history, posting a lengthy statement ahead of his scheduled press conference detailing the new sanctions package.
"At dawn begins an economic D-Day — the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary," Bessent wrote, declaring that the U.S. and its allies are now entering "the endgame" of their campaign against Tehran.
In the post, Bessent credited President Trump with dismantling Iran's military capabilities, claiming the administration has "destroyed nearly 100 percent of its military factories, and buried its nuclear program." He framed the new economic measures as the final phase of that campaign.
Bessent also issued a stark warning to third-party nations that have helped Iran weather previous sanctions pressure. "Those who fear the danger of defying Tehran ought not to discount the cost of testing Washington," he wrote, adding that the administration's objective is to "sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical" Iranian regime.
The Treasury Secretary described the Islamic Republic as having "subsisted by dressing extortion as security guarantees" — a calculation he said has now been fundamentally altered under the Trump administration.
Details of the new sanctions package were expected to be formally unveiled at Bessent's 2 p.m. ET press conference.
